Tabitha Food for Life
How we help
With a trained staff of young people, we feed children, who are borderline malnourished, 5 days a week. These are children we know and those who are referred to us by local organizations. The meals are designed to give maximum nourishment for the best price. Through in house visitations and monthly teachings for families we teach parents about healthy nutritional and hygienic habits so that families can experience healthier lives as well.
Our aim is not to have children become dependent on our program, but to graduate them from an undernourished state to a nourished one and send them back to their families with healthier habits. We also follow up with the families to ensure that the kids and siblings are receiving adequate nutrition.
Tabitha Food for Life has been operating since November 2004 at our House of Jubilee location. As we are in the process of developing a successful foundational model, we have chosen to start with 30 children. As we have been able to train more children's workers and increase our resources, we currently feed up to 100 children a day, and we hope to expand to other more needy areas in the vicinity.Presently, we are not equipped to care for extremely malnourished children because they require “around the clock” care by nurses as their conditions are critical. In the future, we hope to have a medical facility to care for these children as well.
What it’s like
This is what a typical day is like:
Children then go home with a full stomach, much love and intellectual stimulation. We have a bible based curriculum on Saturdays; on Sundays we invite the kids’ families to our church service, after which a family meal is served.
Our Tabitha leadership team consists of Benjie Gabriel (director, degree in business administration), Ate Inday (head cook -- former cook for House of Joy home for malnourished children), Janice Samprano (Education major who is also the principal of Jubilee Kindergarten), and Len May Garces (Education major).
